Who We Are
Children International is a nonprofit, humanitarian organization dedicated to alleviating the burdens and effects of poverty on Filipino children. Our child sponsorship program provides medical, educational, material and emotional aid to impoverished children in the country. We provide sponsored children with the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and realize their full potential.
Our mission is to bring real and lasting change to children living in poverty. In partnership with our contributors, we reduce their daily struggles, invest in their potential, and provide them with the opportunity to grow up healthy, educated and prepared to succeed and contribute to the society.
Our vision is that every child graduates from our program as a healthy, educated, self-reliant adult with the ability and drive to break free from poverty while improving their own communities.
Children International believes that all children have a right to protection from abuse. We recognize that child protection is an essential step in attaining our vision of helping children grow to be self-reliant adults. Therefore, the organization adheres to a Child Protection Policy based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the InterAction Child Protection standards. Our vision for child protection is based on the following guiding principles:
- Zero tolerance for child abuse
- Protection of children’s rights and their best interests
- A commitment to recognizing children as the first priority when dealing with all identified or suspected cases of child abuse
- Integration of child protection into all aspects of organizational strategy, structures and work practices.
Children International (www.children.org) was founded in 1936 in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. For many years, its primary focus was on disabled and homeless children. In the 1980s, Children International expanded its programs to other countries to address the growing global need to eradicate poverty, launching projects in India, Philippines, Guatemala, Chile, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Colombia and Ecuador. Today, we also work in Mexico and Zambia.
Children International began its work in the Philippines in 1982. In its years of operation and presence in the country, thousands of children and youth have been served.
